Description by the author

The 36 km long family bike tour starts at the Hundertwasser train station. The station building designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser is unique in the world. Golden balls, colorful columns and mosaics, trees and shrubs on the roof, and many original features can be discovered here while normal train traffic is running. The tour leads out of Uelzen through the city forest with ancient trees and hidden ponds to Westerweyhe, where a natural swimming pool at the campsite invites you to swim. Soon after Westerweyhe, you immerse yourself in the Bobenwald. It is one of the largest Hainsimsen beech forests in the Lüneburg Heath and a nature reserve. The magnificent old forest provides a home for black woodpeckers, stock doves, jackdaws, and bats. The next stop is Ebstorf. It is worth planning some time here: for the medieval heath monastery with the famous faithful copy of a world map from the 13th century (Tel. 05822-2304). Also worth seeing: the historical pharmacy museum (on request, Tel. 05822-3941). From Ebstorf, continue in a southerly direction. Not far from the cycle path, the Melzingen Arboretum in Wittenwater invites you to take a walk. After the war, the garden was managed by Christa von Winning to feed the family. Later, she brought seeds and plants from garden trips around the world, from which today's "Garden of 800 Trees" emerged. In the garden café, you can enjoy cakes and pies suitable for a cycling break. The tour then leads through Linden and Gr. Süstedt to Gerdau and Barnsen – home to the motor and glider airfield of the "Cumulus" aviation club. Here you can have coffee on the terrace and dream of flying. Spontaneous flights are possible during flight operations! Just contact the flight control. Usually, a friendly pilot will take you for a spin. The final stage of the tour runs through the Uelzen city forest. Before it opens up to the city area, you reach the Uelzen wildlife enclosure. Here you can observe deer, wild boars, and eagle owls. There is also a petting zoo with goats. Some animals can be fed – they prefer cucumbers, carrots, and potatoes. The enclosure is always freely accessible, as is the large playground right next to it. From the wildlife enclosure on the outskirts, it's just a stone's throw back to the Hundertwasser train station.
