Start: Vluyner Platz
Vluyner Platz on Niederrheinallee is the heart of the Vluyn district. Small shops and dining options invite you to stroll around and enjoy.
Kirchplatz & Vluyner Village Church
The St. Antonius Chapel was first mentioned in 1482. After the reform of the County of Moers in 1580, it became the Protestant village church and has been an independent parish since 1614. Parts of the bell tower still date back to the 15th century. The hall church was extensively restored in the last decade.
Mining settlements "Alte Kolonie" and "Neue Kolonie"
The establishment of the mining settlements "Alte Kolonie" (1917-1925) and "Neue Kolonie" (1926-1930) resulted from the influx of many miners who found a new home in Neukirchen-Vluyn in addition to work. The different types of houses are now listed as historical monuments and, along with the old winding towers on the former mining site, are the last remnants of the declining coal mining industry.
Neukirchen Village Church
The origins of the village church date back to 1230, when there was already a pastor living in the village. The initially single-nave church was built as the "new church" of the Repelen parish and gave the district its name. The church, originally dedicated to Saint Quirinus, was reformed to the Protestant faith in 1580 and still serves as a sacred space for the Protestant community to this day. During this time, the church was also expanded with its side aisles.
Halde Norddeutschland
Halde Norddeutschland is a former spoil tip of the former Niederberg mine. Over 80 million tons of mining material were piled up to create this impressive mountain landscape. Since 2002, the spoil tip has been released from mining supervision and is open to everyone at all times. Visitor attractions on the approximately 102-meter high spoil tip are the landmarks "Hallenhaus" and "Himmelstreppe". Those who reach the summit of the spoil tip via the 359 steps of the Himmelstreppe or one of the numerous hiking trails enjoy a magnificent view of the Lower Rhine and the Ruhr area.
Bloemersheim Castle
Bloemersheim Water Castle was first mentioned in 1406 and is one of the oldest historical buildings in the city area. The castle is still the ancestral seat of the von der Leyen family and houses the Frhr.-von-der-Leyensche Gutsverwaltung Bloemersheim. The estate management is a versatile family business, consisting mainly of agriculture, fruit growing, and forestry. The orchards, known for their apples and pears, as well as strawberries, sweet cherries, blueberries, and plums, sell their products in the farm shop on Niederrheinallee in Neukirchen-Vluyn (L140). Regularly, Bloemersheim hosts courtyard concerts and selected cultural events.
Former Niederberg Mining Area
In the last century, the history of Neukirchen-Vluyn was significantly shaped by the Niederberg mine. Mining was carried out with a total of five shafts from 1917 until the mine's closure in 2001. Niederberg was one of the most successful mines in the Ruhr area, producing high-quality fat coal that was also exported abroad. Today, the winding towers 1 and 2 and the machine house still stand, serving as industrial monuments reminding of the city's mining history.
