Railway track cycle path Aachen - Jülich

We start in the historic old town directly at Aachen Cathedral. Urban hustle and bustle are quickly replaced by a quiet suburban idyll. At Europaplatz, surrounded by highway ramps and industrial areas, we dive from the hustle and bustle of the city into a green oasis. Far from settlements and traffic, we follow the babbling Wurm. Along the way, we pass Gut Kalkofen, one of the many manorial estates in the rural urban area, whose roots date back to the Middle Ages. Beyond Würselen, the landscape becomes increasingly rural. The idyllic village of Euchen with its partially up to 300 years old square farms creates a rural atmosphere. Cycling through the field and meadow-dominated Bördelandschaft, we continue towards Jülich, accompanied by the imposing slag heaps that emerged during mining. They are witnesses of the mining history of the former Aachen region and remind us of the abandoned mines that shaped the region for over a century. Today, many of the slag heaps are under nature conservation due to their diversity of animals and plants, serving as a refuge for endangered species. Along the route, we also regularly encounter old station buildings and isolated rail facilities as silent witnesses of past glorious railway days, reminding us that trains once traveled on this route to transport coal from the mine sites or, more recently, sugar beets. In Jülich, be sure to visit the Citadel from the Renaissance and the Brückenkopf Park from the Napoleonic era.
