History and Stories

This circular tour is approximately 34 km long and leads to two historic city centers as well as to the two highlights in the "Land of Hermann": the Hermannsdenkmal and the Externsteine. Both are historic sites surrounded by many stories. The starting and ending point is the Lippisches Landesmuseum in Detmold, which not only deals with regional history but also with the myth surrounding the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest and the Hermannsdenkmal. Along the way, the LWL Open-Air Museum, the Vogelpark Heiligenkirchen, and the Adlerwarte (a small detour) are also worth seeing.
The tour leads through a magnificent landscape, but there are also hills to overcome. Those who do not want to climb up to the Hermannsdenkmal can also choose an alternative flat route. Along the way, there are plenty of restaurants and pubs for a break.
