The village of Hellefeld is part of the hiking paradise "Old Testament" and has developed into a religious center for the surrounding eleven villages and settlements at the latest in the high Middle Ages. In the year 1179, a pastor is mentioned for the first time for the village. The construction of the Romanesque church can be dated to the first half of the 12th century, possibly also to the last quarter of the 11th century. In the years 1874-1877, the dilapidated church building was demolished and at the same time a new nave was built in the neo-Gothic style. The Romanesque tower, which still shapes the village's appearance today, was preserved.
