The valley of the Boschbeek is characterized by differences in height. The Boschbeek, which forms the national border, constantly shifts the German-Dutch border through its course. In both sub-areas, there are larger Gagelmoor areas, important breeding grounds for Bluethroats and Blackcaps. The nature reserve, together with the De Meinweg National Park, harbors the largest adder population along the entire German-Dutch border. Also typical is the occurrence of badgers and wild boars. In recent years, the area has significantly increased in importance for nature conservation through the implementation of numerous maintenance and development measures.
