The starting point of the third stage of the pilgrimage is the monastery complex Brenkhausen. Today, the General Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Germany is headquartered here. In the spirit of living ecumenism and hand in hand with the Catholic church community, they allow the monastic life to flourish anew. You are warmly invited to immerse yourself in this world for a moment and hear about the spirituality of the Coptic Church.
The path leads from Brenkhausen initially up to the nature reserve Räuschenberg. From up here, you have a wonderful view of Brenkhausen and the Weser Uplands. The sunny slopes of Räuschenberg are traditionally grazed by goats. While in spring you can admire a colorful bloom, in summer oregano and thyme fill the air with their aromatic scent, creating a Mediterranean flair.
Passing the small airfield on Räuschenberg and through a wooded area, you are now approaching the town of Höxter. With the increasing proximity to the town, the sounds of everyday life will increasingly shape your perception along the way. Perhaps it's an opportunity to consciously listen and imagine how the ambient sounds of your own world provide a framework.
The pilgrimage now leads right through the half-timbered town of Höxter. The two towers of the Kilianikirche are recognizable from afar. The curious thing: The two towers are not only different in height, but also have two owners. While the smaller tower is maintained by the city, the taller tower is the responsibility of the Protestant church community.
Passing the historic town hall, you then reach the banks of the Weser, which you now follow all the way to Corvey. Outwardly simple, imposing, and defensive. Inwardly sublime, majestic, and dignified. This is how the westwork of Corvey appears, which with its more than 1,200-year history is unparalleled throughout Europe. In June 2014, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List along with the old monastery district. In addition to the Carolingian westwork, worth seeing are the baroque castle complex, the cloister, the abbots' gallery, and the magnificent Emperor's Hall. In the princely library, where the poet Hoffmann von Fallersleben once worked as a librarian, almost 75,000 volumes have found their home.
If you are now truly into the taste of pilgrimage, you can follow the Way of St. James from Corvey towards Paderborn and further to Spain. Embark on your journey!
