Description by the author

This 11.3 km long Spessart trail entices hikers with magnificent views over the Kinzig valley and as far as the Vogelsberg.

A detour to Steinau's old town with its wealth of cultural experiences is well worthwhile: The castle, a secondary residence of the lords and counts of Hanau, as well as the old town center in the sign of the Brothers Grimm invite you to immerse yourself in the eventful past of Steinau an der Straße. The Spessart trail runs through the Kinzig valley, the natural area of the northern sandstone Spessart, where the Brothers Grimm spent their childhood and where the Grimm family once lived. Lined by fields, accompanied here and there by trees, the hiker lets himself fall into the lap of the Kinzig valley - one of those moments of happiness: alone in the open countryside, free and yet safe. The view sweeps towards Bellings, with three nature reserves close by. The Bellinger Berg in the nature reserve of the same name rises up strikingly - as a dense mixed deciduous forest area with species-rich flora, it is one of the most important excursion areas in southern Hesse. The vineyard is also nearby; in the Middle Ages, wine was cultivated on the built-up ridge, and until the middle of the 20th century, arable farming was practiced, as evidenced by the remains of the field margins parallel to the slope. South of the Bellinger Warte, in the middle of the forest, lie the Neudorfwiesen meadows near Steinau - wet and dry mountain meadows are protected there for the conservation of species and biotopes of supra-regional importance. The hike continues through a varied landscape: after open meadows, you enter the forest. But soon a clearing appears. Another brief sniff of forest air and the trail continues across meadows and fields until it reaches the small village of Seidenroth. Leaving Seidenroth behind, the route leads in a westerly arc around the "Lange Berg" through dense woodland. Lined by meadows and fields, the last section of the Spessart trail leads along a dirt track to Steinau - back to the starting point of the hike.
