It is inconspicuous, but despite its moderate height, it wants to make a big impression: the mountain ridge that stretches east of the resort of Freigericht - Horbach, around which the 9.9 km long Spessartbogen extra tour winds. With its unforested slopes and hilltops, the natural idyll and one of the most far-reaching views of the western Spessart to Freigericht and Linsengericht as well as over the Kinzig valley, out into the Wetterau and the Vogelsberg.

The Spessart trail offers a variety of options for getting to know the Spessartbogen. This Spessart trail can also be mastered by inexperienced hikers - the route length and ascents are manageable.

From the parking lot at Gondelteich in Freigericht-Horbach, the tour leads through a meadow and forest valley along the naturally meandering Näßlichbach stream. In the Näßlichgrund, a Kneipp facility invites you to wade through the water. Refreshed by Sebastian Kneipp's water cure, you can continue along the path lined with green meadows and trees at a brisk pace. It is not too far to the Mariengrotte, which is located above the Wiesental valley, was built after the Second World War and consecrated in 1949 - a stone building leaning against the rocky and wildly overgrown slope in the midst of green ferns. A retreat where contemplation and a pilgrimage atmosphere can be felt. The moment of "turning inwards" is followed by a contemplative walk through the narrow stream valley past the Rochusberg. When the hiker emerges from the forest onto the open field, he or she is rewarded with a breathtaking view on the ridgeway along the hillside, which is absurdly called "Häßlich". With a turn to the left, the hiker finds himself on the Spessartbogen. After passing the cherry tree avenue above Waldrode, the hiker heads straight for the enchanted toad pond near Waldrode. To the north of the ridge, you pass the fishing ponds - gentle waves blur the reflective landscape. The crest of the Junkernberg opens up the view and provides an impressive view into the distance. As a reward for your hiking success, we recommend a stop for refreshments in Horbach. At the weekend, you can also take a break at the Horbach bird sanctuary.
