The long circular route offers you a nice mix of leisurely and sporty stages. The Main, Neckar, Mümling and Mud rivers are your companions. Relaxed cycling stages through romantic river valleys allow you to recharge your batteries for the green mountains of the Odenwald.
On the heights, you can expect wonderful distant views over a lovely landscape. Along the way, picturesque villages with cozy half-timbered houses and stately buildings invite you to take a break: discover castles, palaces, churches, monasteries and much more. So much fresh air naturally works up an appetite: our Odenwald inns offer you fresh specialties from the region for cyclists of all ages.
Route description in five stages:
Day 1: From Erbach/Michelstadt to Hirschhorn (approx. 45 km)
Don't just set off cycling, take your time and discover Erbach and Michelstadt. The winding half-timbered towns will give you a warm welcome and get you in the mood for your Odenwald cycling experience. Erbach Castle and Michelstadt Town Hall are just the most famous of the many buildings worth seeing. Now it's time to set off: climb the Odenwald mountains.
Above the Mümling valley, you cycle upstream past the historic Himbächel viaduct to Beerfelden. In the middle of the small town, the Mümling springs from its bright red sandstone fountain. You reach Rothenberg on a high-level trail with impressive panoramic views. Now you can let it roll: After a refreshing downhill ride, you will reach the picturesque Hirschhorn am Neckar.
Day 2: From Hirschhorn to Mosbach (approx. 35 km)
This stage takes you leisurely along the romantic Neckar in the Baden Odenwald. First, explore the old town of Hirschhorn and the castle with its magnificent view of the Neckar valley. Continue to the historic town of Eberbach. For a stroll through the picturesque alleyways of the old town, all you have to do is cross the Neckar bridge.
After the next bend in the river, you will be greeted by the majestic Zwingenberg Castle. A bridge takes you to the other bank of the Neckar. At Neckargerach, you cross the Neckar again and cycle on to the half-timbered town of Mosbach, your destination for today's stage.
Day 3: From Mosbach to Buchen/Walldürn (approx. 40/50 km)
After a short stroll through the old town of Mosbach with its magnificent half-timbered buildings, the route initially takes you gently uphill. You follow the course of the former Mosbach-Mudau narrow-gauge railroad, which has been converted into a beautiful cycle path. A two-kilometre detour from Langenelz to Mudau is worthwhile for railroad enthusiasts: the last steam locomotive of the narrow-gauge railroad is located at the former station.
Your destination for today is either Buchen, with its stalactite cave and pretty old town, or Walldürn, with its impressive pilgrimage basilica and the Gottersdorf open-air museum.
Day 4: From Buchen/Walldürn to Obernburg (approx. 55/45 km)
Today you cycle downstream through the picturesque Marsbach valley to the baroque town of Amorbach. Explore the "architectural jewel box" with its famous princely abbey and baroque old town. With Franconian conviviality, the little river Mud leads you down to the Main, which you cross four times today - each time with a different charming view.
Your next stop is Miltenberg, the "Pearl of the Main" with the famous half-timbered ensemble at the "Schnatterloch" market square and the Mildenburg castle with its stunning views. On the other bank of the Main, you cycle past red sandstone terraces and green vineyards.
The Franciscan monastery of Engelberg rewards a detour with its beautiful monastery complex and magnificent viewing terrace. Via the picturesque Klingenberg with its Clingenburg castle and the half-timbered town of Wörth with its interesting maritime museum, you reach the Roman town of Obernburg.
Day 5: From Obernburg to Erbach/Michelstadt (approx. 45 km)
Before you get on the saddle and leave the Main today, it is worth visiting the Obernburg Roman Museum. The small river Mömling, later christened Mümling, leads you gently uphill through idyllic orchards back into the Odenwald. Breuberg Castle, one of the largest and most beautiful castles in Hesse, greets you from afar. How about a detour to the imposing castle hill?
Through the Wiesental valley, you reach Bad König. Explore the thermal baths with the castle, the spa gardens and the Odenwald thermal baths. Continue along quiet forest paths and along the Mümling to Michelstadt-Steinbach. Visit the Carolingian Einhardsbasilika and the fairytale Fürstenau Castle before returning to your starting point after five eventful days of cycling.
