The "Dahrener Berg" beech forest area is the largest contiguous area of its kind in Upper Lusatia and is home to a wide variety of plants and animals. The forests of the Dahrener Berg are mostly pure beech stands. Mixed tree species include English oak, common birch, spruce, larch and the rare silver fir, which is one of the most important in the Lusatian uplands. As a result of the thinning carried out in the 1990s, copper beech has been able to establish itself in some stands on the Dahrener Berg. Shrubs such as hazelnut and stag elder are also present in the beech forests. The ground flora is made up of undemanding species such as wiregrass, bilberry, wood sorrel and wood bluegrass.
If you are lucky, you may spot rare birds such as the little flycatcher or the black woodpecker on a hike through the largest beech forest area in Upper Lusatia. You are most likely to spot these species in older stands of copper beech.
