The village was first mentioned in 1267 and was owned by the Marienthal monastery. The influence of the patronage only came to an end in the 19th century. As the village remained without a railroad connection at the end of the last century, no industry developed and the townscape was able to retain the character of an Upper Lusatian farming and weaving village largely intact. Together with the municipality of Bertsdorf, it comes closest to the archetype of a colonization-rich forest settlement with all traces of regional history in the Zittau region.
