Extensive unobstructed meadows as far as the eye can see and the soothing scent of camomile and elderberry invite you to slow down.
The Swedish King Charles XII must have felt the same when he stayed in Nechern in 1706 during the Great Northern War. At the time, he promised the enemy people lenient treatment of the vanquished.
Emperor Napoleon even stayed in the neighboring Wurschen Castle in 1806 on his return journey after signing the Peace of Tilsit, before returning to the Battle of Bautzen seven years later.
Nechern is the hometown of the artist Martin Nowak-Neumann. With his work "Mišter Krabat", he brought the most famous Sorbian legend back into the public consciousness.
