On the Saxon Way of St. James / Spree Cycle Path, past the Spreebad, the route leads along the Neuesche Promenade into the Humboldthain. The mostly shady path follows the course of the river to Grubschütz, where the "Spreetal" invites you to stop for a bite to eat. From here, you could hike back the same way or continue along the Spree. The Doberschauer Schanze, the remains of a Sorbian castle, is worth a detour. In Obergurig, the old watermill beckons. It charmingly combines a technical monument and culinary delights. Further along the Spree cycle path, at the almost 300-year-old stone arch bridge, the Kuchenhäusel offers refreshments. This is where the old Bautzen-Prague trade route crossed the Spree. From Mönchswalde, you can take bus 121 back to Bautzen. Whether to the nearby "Bierbrauhaus Obergurig" restaurant or to continue the tour along the road towards the mountains, with a view of the Grosspostwitz church tower on the left, you can walk into the village as far as the main road B96 and take a bus back from Pilgerschänke.
