Emtinghausen-Riede-Tour

Signed cycle path in the municipality of Thedinghausen: Riede is a very old settlement on the valley sand terrace of the Weser-Urstromtal, where Felde, Emtinghausen, and Bahlum are also located. Riede was first mentioned in a document in 1054 and the formerly independent communities of Riede and Felde belonged to the Grafschaft Hoya until the territorial reform of 1972. Emtinghausen, first mentioned in a document in 1260, belonged until 1972 as an exclave to the district of Braunschweig. Even today, tractors with SY or BS license plates can still be found sporadically in both Riede and Emtinghausen.

1. Emtinghausen Mill
The gallery Dutch windmill, which was lavishly renovated with EU funding, was officially inaugurated in 2010 as part of the 750th anniversary celebration of the communities of Emtinghausen and Bahlum. Today, the mill is used as a meeting place for events, weddings, and guided tours by the village association Emtinghausen-Bahlum. At the intersection in Emtinghausen, there used to be the restaurant "Zum Götzen" with a large hall, the gas station and plumbing shop Lange, the bakery Böhlke, and the hairdresser Graf. The dairy, also located at the intersection, was in operation until 1969. Today, a pickle factory is located in the building.

2. Emtinghausen Village Square
Until 1972, there was still a primary school in Emtinghausen. Even today, the bell frame on the village square in Schulstraße bears witness to this time. There is also a monument in honor of the Battle of Leipzig from 1913. Today, the old school is used as a kindergarten with an adjacent nursery for the youngest children. This is followed by the sports hall built in 1973, including outdoor sports facilities.

3. Fruit and Vegetable Plantations
On the fields in Emtinghausen, Felde, and Donnerstedt, you will find top products of local cultivation. Depending on the season, you can purchase regional products such as asparagus, strawberries, cherries, apples, pears, raspberries, plums, potatoes, among others, in farm shops or at weekly markets. From July to September, you have the opportunity to pick various types of fruit yourself. A visit to Schröder's Plantagencafé under the apple trees is worthwhile.

4. St. Andreas Church Riede
One of the most beautiful churches in the municipality of Thedinghausen is St. Andreas Church in Riede. Impressive fresco paintings in Italian technique fill almost all the vaults of the church nave from the 15th century. The central figure of all the group of figures is Christ enthroned above the altar as the judge of the world on the day of judgment. All frescoes were found during the renovation in 1900 under a thick layer of plaster, carefully uncovered, supplemented in some parts, and refreshed in colors. They are said to date from shortly after 1350. A visit to Riede Church is worth it just for these frescoes.

5. Riede Village Center
At the intersection of Bremer Straße/Randermannsweg is the listed house of former innkeeper Heinrich Randermann from 1900. From 1964 to 1991, Hermann and Käte Iden ran a grocery store and a restaurant with a hall operation there. In front of the former bakery Diers is the former memorial square. In place of the monument, there is a large boulder with the coat of arms of the municipality of Riede.

6. Old Fire Station Riede
The old fire station was the domicile of the local fire brigade until the new building in 2000. Today it is used as a community center with a library.

7. Holschenböhl
According to legend, the unusual name originated from a giant who, during his wanderings through the Weserurstromtal, is said to have had his wooden shoe (in Low German "Holschen") full of sand and is said to have emptied it right there, where the excursion destination Holschenböhl now stands.
