Even today, oil is still being extracted in the Hankensbüttel area. You can learn about the significance this has had for the location and how oil extraction has developed at 14 stations. Information on oil geology, production development, extraction techniques, as well as social, political, and financial impacts are explained.
Since 1954, oil extraction has been one of the most important production sites in Germany in the Hankensbüttel area. In the 1970s, Hankensbüttel was the third strongest field in oil production in Germany. Today, hardly anyone knows that there was once the most productive drilling site ever in Germany in the Hankensbüttel-Süd area. At the southwestern entrance of Hankensbüttel, there is an old deep pump drive that is intended to reference this mining tradition in the Hankensbüttel area. Many facilities for oil extraction and processing have been dismantled. This tour is also offered as a guided bike tour.
