The village of Cunewalde, first mentioned in 1222, is one of the largest in Upper Lusatia. Its scenic location in the wide glacial valley basin between the Czorneboh (Sorbian for Black God) and Bieleboh (White God) mountain ranges makes it particularly attractive. The village is part of the Via Sacra because of its village church, the largest in Germany with 2,632 seats. The bronze memorial to the victims of the First World War was created by the German-Jewish sculptor Benno Elkan, who also designed the large menorah in front of the Knesset in Jerusalem. The cemetery is home to the tomb of the writer Wilhelm von Polenz ("Der Büttnerbauer"), who was closely associated with Gerhard Hauptmann, Rainer Maria Rilke, Lew Tolstoi, Erich Mühsam and Theodor Fontane.
From Cunewalde, excursions to Bieleboh and Czorneboh are worthwhile, each with a mountain restaurant and viewing tower.
