Eifelsteig Partner hike - the Struffelt route

Whatever kind of hiker you are, this hiking loop has a lot to offer. Some hikers may be more interested in the detailed information about the dam that the signs provide, while others come to enjoy the views of the many different landscapes that alternate along the loop.
Between Rott and Roetgen you reach the bare hilltop of Struffelt, at 450 m, known even on historical maps as a heath area jutting up from the midst of wooded surroundings. Many rare plants and animals live in this unique biotope. One such plant typical for the Struffelt is the purple moor grass or “pipe grass”, with its long stalk and purple-grey ears; in former times, pipe smokers used stalks of this grass as pipe cleaners, because the smooth stalks did not get stuck when pulled through a pipe. Atop the Struffelt ridge you will cross a spectacular high moor and nature reserve that remains accessible even in damp conditions thanks to its elevated wooden footpaths. The hike leads through the water supply area of the Dreilägerbach Valley Dam. Along the way, signs explain all the interesting features of the landscape around you. A new feature on this hike is the viewing platform where you can stop, rest, and take in an impressive view of the dam wall. At a length of approximately 10 km with mostly moderate changes in elevation and interesting sights to see, this loop is an ideal family hike.
