The highest elevations are the spoil tips, mostly formed from the mining material, many of the spoil tips are now used for tourism and various leisure activities.
Many of the spoil tips offer a wonderful panoramic view over the wide landscape of the Lower Rhine as well as over the cities of the adjacent Ruhr area.
The Norddeutschland spoil tip, in Neukirchen-Vluyn, 102 meters high, can be reached via the Stairway to Heaven, as well as by bicycle along a path. 80,000,000 tons of mining material are stored there.
The tour continues to the Rockelsberg spoil tip, in Duisburg-Rheinhausen, 68.8 meters high, a spoil tip of the former Krupp steelworks.
The Alsumer Berg spoil tip, in Duisburg-Bruckhausen, 70 meters high. The former shipping and fishing village was almost completely destroyed by mining subsidence and bombing in World War II, the waste, e.g. rubble, was deposited here.
From a distance, the Geleucht by Otto Piene on the Rheinpreußen spoil tip, in Moers-Meerbeck, is visible. The spoil tip measures 103 meters in height and consists of mining material from the Rheinpreußen shaft.
The fifth spoil tip on this tour is the Pattberg spoil tip in Moers-Repelen with 85 meters in height. There is even a summit cross at the highest point.
