Wasserfälle am Tatzelwurm

We walk upstream from the spa facilities in Bayrischzell, past the Schönborn Chapel to the valley station of the suspension lift. Our hiking trail W3 runs below the suspension lift and then climbs steadily up to the Sudelfeld mountain inn at an altitude of 1097 meters. From the transformer house below the inn, we follow trail W3 downhill to the Tatzlwurm waterfall, around 4.2 km away. The waterfall runs over three steps and plunges about 100 meters into the depths. According to legend, you used to hear its thunder and see the spray rising, but you could only see the gorge and the waterfall if you stood right in front of it. Anyone moving carelessly in this area could easily fall into the gorge and be "swallowed up by the Tatzelwurm". Nowadays, access to the spectacular waterfall, over which the waters of a tributary of the Auerbach stream flow, is accessible via a developed path and a bridge in both the upper and lower sections. The route is partly shady and very scenic. From Tatzlwurm, we can take the Wendelstein ring line bus back to Bayrischzell, but be sure to check the bus timetable.
