Mit der Bahn in die Berge: Von Geitau zum Wendelstein bis nach Bayrischzell

You can see the 55-metre-high Bavarian Broadcasting mast from afar. You have to get a little closer to see the round domes of the observatory. And you have to look for the little church between the crags.

With its many buildings, the Wendelstein is one of the most prominent peaks in Upper Bavaria. And it has a lot of history and many stories to tell. BR could talk about Germany's highest ground network transmitter, the Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Munich University about the exceptionally good observation conditions at the observatory. And the 130-year-old walls of Germany's highest church (built in 1889) are sure to have a lot to tell...

The ascent from Geitau is not often made and leads uphill in a steep zig-zag. The view becomes more impressive with every meter of altitude. After the last hairpin bends, you will inevitably meet Wendelstein visitors at the summit station who have come up in the gondola or on Bavaria's oldest cog railroad.

Continue uphill to the summit at the observatory, from where the 360° panorama extends far beyond Bavaria: deep into the Kaiser Mountains and the Venediger Group and on the other side into the flatlands from Lake Chiemsee to Munich.

A beautiful, narrow path leads back over open alpine pastures and through the idyllic mountain forest down to the train station in Bayrischzell.
