Description

Coal is by far the largest fossil energy source on Earth. It has formed over many millions of years from plants exposed to high pressures and temperatures in deep layers of the earth. This process is called coalification and occurs in several stages. Peat is initially formed, then lignite, followed by hard coal, and finally anthracite.
The lignite mining areas in the southeast of the Burgenland district belong to the Zeitz-Weißenfels lignite mining district. This area is characterized by the long tradition of mining, which began here over 300 years ago. After initially mining coal through underground tunnels in deep mines, open-cast mining followed from the 1970s onwards.

Around the turn of the century, mining developed into a dominant industry for the region with landscape-defining large deep mines and open-cast mines. In parallel, a broad coal processing and refining industry emerged, from briquette factories to coking plants to coal liquefaction facilities. Each of the technical epochs of the lignite industry leaves its unmistakable traces.

The landscape between Zeitz, Teuchern, Hohenmölsen, and the border to Saxony is characterized by mining with its diverse effects in the form of open-cast mining fields, heaps, residual pits, spoil tips, deep mining spoil fields, and the remnants of industrial facilities.
