Description
Highlights of the tour:
1 MarketAround the market square are the town hall, hotels, restaurants, and the Freyburg Tourist Association. Formerly, the square was home to the gilded equestrian statue of Duke Christian of Saxe-Weissenfels. The torso of the destroyed monument in 1948 is now located in the courtyard of Neuenburg Castle. The former location is marked by a metal border with an inscription, as the market square was redesigned in 2003 as part of an architectural competition under the motto "Tuscany of the North".
2 Town HallThe foundation stone for the town hall, which rests on Romanesque foundations and vaulted cellars, was laid in 1425. The present appearance is marked by renovations after the city fires of 1551 and 1682, which also severely affected the town hall.

3 St. Marien ChurchThe construction of the late Romanesque church, also known as the "sister" of Naumburg Cathedral, dates back to the period between 1210 - 1230 and was probably commissioned by the Thuringian Landgrave Ludwig IV (reigned from 1217-1227). The church is fundamentally Romanesque. In the early 15th century, the apse was demolished and replaced by a Gothic choir. The southern side apse also fell victim to an attached sacristy. At the end of the 15th century, the nave was dismantled and replaced by a hall aisle.

18 Rectorate and District CourtThe original core building of the rectorate dates from the 2nd quarter of the 16th century. The first rector mentioned is Peter Leinewetter in 1555. He had an apartment on the upper floor. A boys' school was established on the ground floor. Shortly after, a "Magtleinschule" was also established. In 1834, due to lack of space, the boys' school relocated to new classrooms in the town hall. Over the years, the city needed significantly more space for all the curious children of the city. In 1861, the cornerstone for the new school and the future district court was laid to the right of the boys' school and inaugurated two years later. Not even 20 years later, the district court moved in, and the current Friedrich Ludwig Jahn School was opened. The Old Rectorate served as a residential building until the 1980s. Today, the building houses a library.
