Short Description

The path follows the course of the Via Regia and extends from Görlitz to Vacha.

Description

On a varied 450 km route, the Ecumenical Pilgrimage Route leads through Central Germany. Starting the journey in Görlitz, the entire route on foot takes about three weeks. Today's route follows the course of the historical trade route Via Regia - the "Royal Road".

On about 60 km, the path leads through Saale-Unstrut. Coming from Leipzig, you will arrive in Merseburg. Here, on the Saale, is the oldest church in the city, the Neumarktkirche St. Thomae, which today serves as a hostel for pilgrims. You can also admire the Merseburg Cathedral and Castle Ensemble from the Saale.
Through meadows and fields, past the Großkaynaer See, you will reach Freyburg on the Unstrut. Before that, you will pass through the "Alte Göhle", an old forest area. In the idyllic wine town of Freyburg, you will find a cozy hostel if needed. From here, follow the Unstrut to Großjena.
You will pass by the "Stony Picture Book" and finally reach the Blütengrund, where you cross by ferry to reach Naumburg. You can also spend the night here. From here, continue along the Saale and cross the nature reserve "Göttersitz", through the Finne to Eckartsberga. From the tower of Eckartsburg, you can enjoy a magnificent view all the way to the Thuringian Basin. Then continue towards Erfurt.
