Canadians are canoes that are paddled with a single-bladed paddle. They have their origins with the First Nations peoples in North America.
Paddling in an open Canadian canoe is one of the most beautiful and intense ways to experience nature and leave everyday life behind. Seeking out your own path on the water, following your own instincts, and seeing what encounters you, is exciting and relaxing in its own way. Each time, the journey and the impressions are different. The light on the water, the wind or the sun on your face, encountering a beaver, the fish in the clear water...
On a day of paddling, even at a leisurely pace, one performs over 1,000 paddle strokes in an hour. A good reason to take a closer look at these strokes. Being able to execute them efficiently and harmoniously, without the first muscles complaining after an hour, brings more long-lasting enjoyment. And thus, the most important thing is mentioned - it's about the fun of paddling in a Canadian canoe. We want to convey that fun from the beginning of the learning process.
A second aspect is safety while paddling, for which you will receive the necessary skills according to ACA standards in our courses.
Our basic courses are suitable for ambitious beginners and experienced paddlers alike, who want to explore the many possibilities of canoeing and master challenging situations.
The skillful interaction of body movement, paddle, boat, and water allows us to perform numerous maneuvers that go far beyond the commonly known paddling techniques. The secrets of the J-stroke with its variations are revealed, as well as different methods of boat recovery after capsizing. This develops a sense of the boat's handling characteristics, pivot points, and efficient power usage while paddling.
Once these techniques are learned, a whole new paddling world opens up to you.
Various high-quality training boats, paddles, and other equipment are available. Participants are welcome to bring their own boats.
The course location is the Forsthaus Ringofen near Templin, situated in a picturesque secluded area directly on the lake. The course takes place on calm waters. A pick-up service from accommodation options in Templin to the course location is available free of charge. Affordable accommodation options can be found at the camping sites on Lake Fähr or Gleuensee. Accommodations are not included in the course.
The courses are led by Harriet Götze and Joachim Lange. Harriet is an ACA Instructor Trainer for canoes in flatwater, whitewater, and wildwater. She has extensive experience in all aspects of canoeing, including wilderness expeditions and a broad methodical knowledge.
Joachim is an ACA Instructor for canoes in the "Touring Canoe" level. He has been paddling in canoes since childhood. By profession, he is a forester and lives at Forsthaus Ringofen. He knows the area like the back of his hand and is happy to provide interesting information about the natural surroundings.
The American Canoe Association (ACA) was founded in 1880 in North America, the homeland of the "open canoe" (= Canadian canoe), and is the oldest canoeing association in the world. The ACA sets international standards in paddlesports. These include safety standards, educational guidelines, certification criteria, and much more. These rules are the opposite of arbitrariness and provide a reliable and measurable background for the activity as a canoe instructor, from which course participants benefit.
Tandem courses can also be booked by individuals. We will then put the teams together on-site.
