Description by the author

The front Hotzenwald offers a scenic hike with plenty of variety on this tour. The Solfelsen has been a registered natural monument since 1950 and is well worth a visit.

The Solfelsen, with its height of 5.4 m and a mass of 230 tons, is not an ice-age erratic boulder, but an exposed stone that has been formed by a long process of weathering. When a quarry was to be built in 1895, the Säckingen section of the Black Forest Association bought the striking rock and the surrounding area in order to save them from destruction. The Solfelsen has been a natural monument since 1950.From the train station, the path (blue diamond) leads through Lindenallee and along the old Bergseestraße towards Bergsee. Leaving the path at the level of the lake, walk a short distance towards the restaurant and follow the narrow path along the rocks on the eastern shore. At the next junction, turn right towards the Bergseekurve signpost and continue in the direction of Solfelsen. You soon reach the shady Schöpfebach valley. A signpost to the west indicates a narrow path to Jungholzer Felsen. The rock is a four-metre-thick slab of Albtal granite, which, like the nearby Solfelsen, was formed by weathering and erosion. A few steps back, the trail marker (blue diamond) continues in the direction of Eglesmatt and along the Hochrheinhöhenweg to Jungholz and the Solfelsen. There, a newly built seating area with a wide view to the west invites you to take a relaxing break. The way back leads to Spatzenhof and from the signpost there towards Windenplatz. Via Günnenbach, you return to the station on hiking trails marked with a yellow diamond through the game reserve.
