The Meller district of Neuenkirchen has existed since 1972 and emerged from the former joint municipality of Neuenkirchen with the communities of Schiplage/St. Annen, Ostenfelde, Insingdorf, Redecke, Holterdorf, Küingdorf, Suttorf, and Neuenkirchen. Neuenkirchen, first documented in 1160, owes its name to the construction of a new church in the 11th century at the current location, after a chapel is said to have existed in Ostenfelde since the 9th century. The church, assigned to the Evangelical denomination in 1657, like most houses in the town center, fell victim to a fire in 1883. The second place of worship in our district, the Catholic parish church of St. Annen, was built in 1505 as a pilgrimage church and is known as such to this day. Recently uncovered frescoes, as well as the rest of the interior, make this church a remarkable architectural monument.
Three oaks in Neuenkirchen, Holterdorf, and Ostenfelde, as well as a beech tree, also in Ostenfelde, are considered natural monuments in this district.
