Historical sites, old oak forests, river meadows and marshes, and of course the imposing megalithic tombs from which it takes its name: the Hünenweg in the Osnabrück region truly offers a lot of variety. Since the summer of 2017, it has been even more relaxing and enjoyable to hike the route from Osnabrück to the Hahnenmoor in Emsland, as the trail has been completely re-marked, prepared, and refreshed with additional rest areas and information boards.
This allows hikers to take on the individual stages in the ancient cultural landscape even more easily, without the need for distracting glances at a map or GPS device.
The waymarking leads precisely to the enormous granite boulders with which our ancestors from the Neolithic era built the dolmens, as well as to the numerous other sights and wonders from the present and the distant past.
Moreover, it is now even easier to gain deep insights into rock layers that are around 150 million years old: the trail leads directly through a quarry in Bramsche-Ueffeln. Here, rock layers formed in the Jurassic period are mined, when this area was completely flooded and was a coastal region.
Infrastructure: Continuous signposting with the Hünenweg logo on trees, posts, destination signs; also 6 information boards, 20 shelters, 80 benches, and in the section of the Osnabrück region, 10 rest areas.
Trail conditions: 22% of the trail runs on asphalt, 65% of the surfaces are natural, and 13% lead over other types of surfaces. The terrain is gently hilly to flat and with low inclines.
Hiking type: Ideal for hikers who love solitude and do not shy away from longer hiking stages.
Our travel tip:
Carefree hiking on the Hünenweg. Discover fascinating natural and cultural landscapes in a sociable group and enjoy your hike on the Hünenweg including a hiking guide, culinary delicacies, and variable stage lengths. A support vehicle will take you (if needed) to the stage destination and back to the starting point of your hike. At idyllic rest areas, hikers can expect a "table is set" service.
