Goldsteig N 16 Großer Falkenstein – Rachel

Today the route runs along the border ridge to Bohemia, always in the Bavarian Forest National Park. To the north lies the Czech national park "Šumava" ("the rushing one"). Special highlights of the day are the many Schachten and Filze. In earlier times, these were forest pastures, especially for young cattle. They were driven up here for the few summer months and looked after by a shepherd. Filze are raised bogs with interesting flora and fauna - but please do not leave the marked paths (mostly boardwalks)! On the route are Sulzschachten, Albrechtschachten, Rindl- and Jährlingsschachten, Lindberger Schachten, Kohl- and Hochschachten, Alm- and Verlorener Schachten. Although this hike is strenuous, it is one of the most beautiful in the Bavarian Forest. At the end, however, it is a somewhat arduous uphill walk to the Waldschmidthaus just below the Rachel summit.
