Description by the author

Beautiful, varied but strenuous day tour due to its length.

Together with the Swabian Alb North Rim Trail (HW 1), the Main Hiking Trail 2 (HW 2) or South Rim Trail is the oldest and one of the most attractive long-distance hiking trails of the Swabian Alb Association. It runs for almost 290 kilometers from Donauwörth to Tuttlingen. Here you always hike
along the Danube and the Urdonau on the southern edge of the Swabian Alb. The experienced and weather-beaten experts from the hiking association have divided the route into around 13 stages, i.e. lengths that require a certain level of hiking fitness. In the past, people were used to setting off cheerfully in the early morning and hiking between 20 and 30 kilometers in one day. The last stage of HW 2 also leads over 26 kilometers from Beuron Monastery to the city centre of Tuttlingen. There, directly at the Danube bridge near the town hall, the Südrandweg meets the Nordrandweg. All paths lead to Tuttlingen ...

This route was developed, laid out and signposted by the Swabian Alb Association more than 100 years ago. To this day, volunteers from the hiking association take care of maintenance and upkeep in sections. The challenging trail winds its way through picturesque countryside, mostly above the Danube, in the middle of the Upper Danube Nature Park. Even the start at Beuron Monastery is a highlight. Via the Liebfrauental and the Jägerhaus, the Kallenberg ruins and the hamlet of Bergsteig, the route crosses the heights between Nendingen and Neuhausen ob Eck. From the ruins of Luginsfeld, the view finally opens up to Tuttlingen, the "city in a square" and world center of medical technology. Just as it began in Beuron, the long-distance hiking trail, which is as rich in tradition as it is in views, ends directly at the Danube again.
