The Schachenwald circuit south-west of Altenstadt is a rather short hike at approx. 7.5 km. The trail begins at the hiking parking lot next to the Romanesque basilica of St. Michael and quickly leads south-west out of the town. Passing Kreuzberg and Moosänger, the trail leads through the gentle, hilly landscape to Schachenwald. The hike is particularly recommended in the late afternoon or early evening hours. This is because the low sun conjures up a magnificent play of light and color across the landscape.
After circling the Schachenwald forest, the trail leads past Wolfsgarten, Hexenbichel including the impressive new riding facility and Grauwinkel back to Altenstadt. On the way back, however, with the sun behind you.
