From St. Peter's Chapel
The St. Peter's Chapel on the road from Marienroth to Posseck is part of our circular hiking trail. The stately St. Peter in the Brauersdorf chapel stood in the demolished Peterskapelle chapel until 1750. In 1520, St. Peter's chapel was called "ecclesia (= church) Prauersdorf". Karl Thomas tells us that St. Peter's spring, which bubbled up below the chapel, was included in the sacred area. According to legend, an old priest ordered a boy to rebuild the dilapidated chapel for the gold he had received as a reward for his service as an altar boy. The greedy father, however, snatches thaler after thaler from him. The boy falls ill at home and dies. In deep mourning, the father builds the pretty chapel in the "same place" as atonement. Charming valley grounds, a former raft pond, quiet, secluded forests and beautiful views characterize this circular hiking trail.
We start our circular hike at the village hall in Gifting (parking and bus stop). Passing the soccer pitch, we hike comfortably up the quaint and open Teuschnitztal valley, changing sides of the stream via numerous raft bridges and two bridges - until we come across a former raft pond.
From the 16th century, raft ponds encouraged rafting and drifting. From the 16th century onwards, rafting ponds facilitated the rafting and floating of the mighty Franconian forest tribes on the partly developed raft streams with their numerous cutting and grinding mills in the narrow and deeply incised valleys of the "rafting Franconian forest", where mill wheels drove the saw gates and millstones.
Before reaching the pond, we turn sharply to the left with the main hiking trail markings and hike uphill in the forest until we reach the road at the top, once again in the open. After a short detour to the right to St. Peter's Church, we continue our hike across the road, walk downhill only very briefly, turn left again immediately and walk to the forest. The hiking trail then leads uphill with a beautiful view of Pressig, the wide valley of the Haßlach and the surrounding Franconian forest heights through the fields to the road. We have to hike up this road briefly to soon reach the village of Posseck (on the pass road) with its church, which is well worth seeing, and the beautiful village center.
The Langheim monks owned Posseck from 1180 to 1388. From the cemetery, there is a visual link to the former mother church in Lahm. It is believed that parts of the parish church date back to the time of the Langheim Cistercians.
At the top of the road, our circular hiking trail leads to the right. After the Aussiedlerhof farm, we keep to the right and walk for a long time on a field path through beautiful meadows, past two mairies, to the forest. We soon reach the Größauer Kreuz cross, where the other hiking trails leave us straight ahead.
A detour to Größau is recommended from this trail junction. In the secluded, pretty village at the foot of the wooded, 642 m high Sattelberg, we see historic buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. The village was renovated in 2004.
If you want to return straight away, turn left and take a pleasant path slightly downhill in the forest and later through the meadows on a path lined with trees and shrubs back to the starting point in Gifting.
