Winterwanderung - Knappensteig

Starting from the area around the Tiefstollen and the mining museum in Peißenberg, the Knappensteig trail leads past the Sulzer Stollen and the Mittelstollen, sometimes steeply uphill, through the forest to Vorderschwaig. Here you leave the signposted tunnel path. The route now continues uphill over open terrain to Oberschwaig. With the television tower always in view, the trail finally leads in a large left-hand bend to the Hoher Peißenberg, where hikers can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view - from the Alps in the south to Lake Ammersee in the north. In addition to the pilgrimage church of Maria Himmelfahrt with its chapel of grace in the Bavarian rococo style, the oldest mountain weather station in the world is also located here. After a serpentine descent through the forest, you soon reach Hohenpeißenberg. From here, follow the tunnel path past the main tunnel through the forest to the junction with the road. The branch path marked on the map heading south leads to an alternative starting point at the Böbinger Ammerbrücke bridge. It also provides a link to hikes along the Ammer. To get back to Peißenberg, follow the road to the wine grower. From the estate, a narrow gravel path leads steeply down to the village.

The branch path to the south is not part of the actual hike. It only serves to connect to an alternative starting point at the Böbinger Ammerbrücke bridge and to connect to the hiking trails along the Ammer. Without this section, you save approx. 6.5 km, almost 140 meters in altitude and around 1:45 hours walking time.
