Eulenstein und Jungfernhöhle - Roter Ring

Start / Finish: Tiefenellern church, Lehmweg / corner of Schlehenweg

The climb is worth it: from the Eulenstein, hikers have a magnificent view of the Ellertal valley all the way to Bamberg. During excavations in the 1950s, over 6,200-year-old skeletal and skull remains of at least 40 people were found in the "Jungfernhöhle" cave. Unfortunately, the finds from the Jungfernhöhle cave are not currently on display in the Bamberg Historical Museum, they are in the archive. 

We walk in a clockwise direction, starting at the church in Tiefenellern with a hiking sign, into the Schlehenweg, keep right until the almost 180-degree bend (Ellerberg-Stübla), follow the left forest path following the signs until you reach the state road again, cross the road here and up the hill towards the striking rock castle (Eulenstein). Climb up across the meadow to the various viewpoints. 

Crossing the Eulenstein: Caution: danger of falling! Continue east across the meadow for approx. 100 m until you reach a prominent group of beech trees. From there, descend steeply diagonally across the meadow to the path marked further on. In the sparse beech forest, you will find the striking rock formation under which the Jungfernhöhle is located. 

Continue in the forest, staying on the ridge, to the west, steeply downhill. Between two smaller rocks - with a little imagination they look like a gate - down the steep path towards Tiefenellern. Pass a vacation home on the left and continue to the unpaved road coming from the left and on to the main road. Cross this and follow the paved clay path downhill into the village and left to the church
