Discover all benefitsThis route starts at the parking lot by the sports center in Neustadt (Wied). The Wied is a 100 km long river that flows into the Rhine and runs through the Westerwald. The lower course of the Wied (Lower Wied Valley) has cut deep into the landscape and meanders strongly: Here you will find hills with altitude differences of up to about 250 meters. This part of the Wied is also less populated than the upper course of the Wied, so the roads in this area are relatively quiet in terms of traffic.
Almost immediately, it goes uphill towards Ammerich. After cycling for a while on the plateau, you descend over Paffenhausen on a rather narrow ring road with some bends into the Wied Valley. Cycling downstream, you ride along the Wied on the bike path through this valley (which is part of the Wied cycling route). From Oberhoppen, it goes uphill for one and a half kilometers (for the climbing profile see the first 1.5 km) and then back down into the Wied Valley. In this part of the Wied Valley, there is no bike path, so you ride on the state road (which has moderate road surface here) downstream through the Wied Valley. Then you leave the Wied Valley in a climb of 5 km towards Sankt-Katharinen through the Brochenbach Valley. In this valley, you ride on a good road that is only accessible to cyclists until you reach the hamlet of Brochenbach. At the hamlet of Brochenbach, you steeply ascend away from the Brochenbach Valley and cycle over a partly wooded plateau before descending back into the Wied Valley at Roßbach.
You cycle through the Wied Valley to Waldbreitbach and leave the Wied Valley again, where there is a real calf-biter: the ascent to Weißfeld, with gradients of up to 18%. Then it steeply descends to the hamlet of Bremscheid and steeply ascends (up to 16%) to the hamlet of Girgenrath. Then follows a descent, with a short steep section of 18% to Hausen (Wied). You follow the Wied Valley for a while on the bike path and then along the state road. Over Glockscheid, you ascend to the Schäfers Kreuz, the last one and a half kilometers are car-free. Over Goldscheid and Hollig, it goes up and down on side roads until you reach Hochscheid. After Hochscheid, it steeply descends (up to 12%) to Elsbach (photos of this descent can be found on this page), quickly followed by the ascent to Siebenmorgen (1.5 km quite steep).
You descend to Dasbach and then ascend to Breitscheid. After cycling for a while on the plateau, it goes down 3.5 km into the valley of the Wied back to the town of Roßbach. Right after that, it goes uphill again, now following the beautiful road to Fernthal, through an idyllic and green valley that is car-free and follows the course of the Masbach.
After passing through the town of Fernthal, it goes downhill (on moderate road surface, August 2024) and uphill (good road surface) to Eulenberg. Then follows the descent into the Wied Valley to Peterslahr. You now follow the Wied Valley Bike Path in 2 parts: at Peterslahr, you go through a former railway tunnel (you must press the button at the entrance of the tunnel to turn on the light in the tunnel), then you cycle along the state road and further you get back onto the bike path on the former railway line, which ends in Neustadt.
