To the wild horses

This hiking route leads through one of the most exciting landscapes in the region: the reclaimed Sophienhöhe in the Rhenish mining area. Where once the open-pit mining in Hambach defined the landscape, today a vast recreational area has emerged – with dense forests, open plateaus, impressive views, and wild horses.

From the starting point, the trail runs along well-developed paths into the wooded surroundings. It quickly becomes clear how varied the landscape is: Young stands alternate with older, fully grown forests. Again and again, open areas reveal wide views over the Jülicher Börde and – on clear days – all the way to the Eifel.

A characteristic feature of the route is its elevation profiles: The Sophienhöhe rises about 200 meters above the surrounding area and thus offers easy to more challenging ascents at intervals. Hikers are rewarded with panoramic views at prominent points like the summit cross or elevated plateaus.

Along the way, the unique history of the landscape's formation becomes tangible. Information points, landmarks, and typical reclamation areas illustrate how nature has reclaimed its space over decades. More than 800 plant species and numerous animal species have now found a new home here.

The tour takes place away from traffic and is therefore particularly suitable for those seeking peace and nature. At the same time, the well-signposted paths and rescue points ensure safe orientation. Particularly impressive is the high plateau where a herd of wild horses lives in a fenced area, and in early summer, the meadows bloom in various colors.
