Description by the author

For cyclists from Twente and the Achterhoek, Die Baumberge is a bit like South Limburg is for Brabant and Limburg cyclists: it is a ridge east of Coesfeld that stretches towards Havixbeck. The difference in altitude (on the road) is from 30 to 80 meters. The highest peak is the Westerberg at 187.6 meters above sea level. However, you won't find any climbs with more than 80 meters of altitude, for that you have to be in the nearby Teutoburg Forest.
The subsoil of the Baumberge consists of sand-lime brick, so that rainwater sinks directly deep into the ground. As a result, the ridge was never densely populated. This area is less known to cyclists. It means that you can still cycle here in peace.

The route runs as far as possible on roads (roads closed to through traffic, with the exception of agricultural traffic and local residents). These are usually in good condition. Two exceptions:
1) the road Gladbeck, side street of the K48: Grass grows through the asphalt on the central axis and in addition the asphalt is brittle (i.e. gravel). It is still doable in the direction of climbing, but you should definitely not descend this road.
2) the roads around the Westerberg (along the slope to Steverdal) have slightly worse asphalt in wooded areas.

This track starts in Rorup and you follow the track clockwise. First it goes towards Coesfelder Berg, where you get an ascent into the Roruper Holz and to the real Coesfelder Berg. The descent via the Bergallee to Coesfeld is a maximum of 9%. Via the Sitterstieg it goes back to the Coesfelder Berg. You climb past Gerleve Abbey (7%).

Then it goes in the direction of Hanrorup and once at the top you have a beautiful view (with Aussischtkanzel) of the surroundings. The route shifts towards Darup with two steeper climbs, the second of which, as mentioned, is less paved.

In Darup it is good to be careful, you have to turn several times in quick succession and then make a steep climb, called Westerhiege. Via Billerbecker Straße (K13) you descend back into Darup with a maximum of 11%, but you quickly descend via the Wullaweg farm road.

The route continues eastwards. Via the hamlet of Uphoven you gradually climb up to the western part of the plateau of the Baumberg (Bomberg). Finally you descend to Steverdal and over a beautiful road through beech forest you climb away from Steverdal to the observation tower Longinusturm at the edge of the forest.

You will then cycle up the edge of the forest and down towards Schapdetten, where a short but steep climb to Leopoldshöhe awaits you. Here you have beautiful views of the surroundings again. Then it's back to the flat country towards Rorup. Shortly before Rorup there is a small climb (Hövel).

Although routeyou states that about 800 meters of altitude have to be overcome, my Garmin Edge 800 registered about 1000 meters of altitude.
