WWu Gengenbach - Hornisgrinde - Gengenbach

Round trip for racing bikes from Gengenbach to the top of Hornisgrinde, which you cycle along the west side.

At the start of the route, you take a detour via Berghaupten and climb as a warm-up along Heiligenreute with a short section of 18% to the top.

After this climb, you descend back to the Kinzig valley, which you follow to Offenburg. You cross through the city and then cycle towards Achern over rolling, quiet roads.

The start of the climb to Hornisgrinde is in Achern. This climb from Achern is known as the hardest climb in the Black Forest. It is the only ascent in the Black Forest with more than 1000 meters of elevation (1031m).

The start of the ascent is in Achern at an altitude of 145m. The climb is almost 18km long to the top at 1155m. The average gradient is 5.8%, with the steepest kilometer at 11.8%. The last stretch is to the left of the hotel near Mummelsee. Only hikers and cyclists come here, and occasionally a bus.

On the way back, you descend via the south side of Hornisgrinde to Ottenhöfen. There, you start the shorter climb of Sohlberg (North side). This climb has a total elevation gain of 385m with an average of 8.8%. The last two kilometers of this short climb are particularly steep, with 500-meter segments of 15, 14, 12, and 15 percent.

Via Lautenbach and Durbach, you cycle over a rolling route back to Gengenbach. The very last stretch is flat.

In total, you cycle 115km with quite a bit of elevation.
