Manderscheid: about volcanoes and castles

Originally based on the Top Tour 55 route of the Rother hiking guide, extended by a tour around the Windsborn crater and the Manderscheid castle trail (along the Upper Castle and Lower Castle in Manderscheid).

Fantastic, varied hike that combines the best around Manderscheid.

First you follow the narrow, wooded Lieserpad to the Wolfschlucht. Then we follow the Eifelsteig, which leads us to the Mosenberg and gives impressions of the volcanic past of this region along the way. We hike around the windborn crater lake, a quiet, small lake where it's nice to stop and rest on one of the jetties.
Through the forest we walk to the Heidsmühle, hotel and restaurant, where it is very nice to linger on the terrace by the ponds. From there we go back to Manderscheid, where we follow the castle trail, go on an exploration tour and possibly visit Manderscheid's 2 castles.
