Last update: April 28, 2018, after I rode this route on April 27.
The route leads via Leveroy to Baexem and Beegden. The Maas is crossed at the weir in Linne.
At Mariahoop, we enter Germany and cycle through the Selfkant, a slightly hilly agricultural area. We ride through the old city gate and past the castle tower of Gangelt, and along the paved exposed bike path through the Rodebachtal (Roodebeek).
Then we cycle into the Wurm Valley. After that, we often ride on roads (roads closed to car traffic, except for residents and agricultural vehicles) towards Nordeifel. These roads are in good condition, but a 1.5-kilometer stretch between Siersdorf and Schleiden is in lesser condition. Sometimes we have a stretch of 0.5 to 1 km on a bike path along busier thoroughfares.
As we cross the area between Aachen and Cologne, where many towns and industrial sectors are located, we have to go directly through some villages and towns. We do this as directly as possible on the shortest route and often on exposed bike paths (one of them in Eschweiler has a drivable natural path). We pass through several smaller towns and the following larger cities: Ubach-Palenberg, Dürwich, and Vöckelsberg (Eschweiler).
After passing Vöckelsberg, it’s about a hundred meters of altitude towards the town of Harmich. We then arrive in the Nordeifel. After descending into the valley of the Wehebach, we ascend to the Katzenknipp. This climb initially takes place on a federal road (state road 25) and later on a road closed to car traffic with excellent asphalt (unlike L25, which has road damage).
After a 3 km descent, we reach Obermaubach and cycle over the dam of the Obermaubach reservoir, in the valley of the Roer.
What remains for us is to follow the course of the Roer upstream. Here, it partly involves roads that are closed to car traffic. Between Obermaubach and Zerkall, there is a 500-meter stretch that is unpaved (but easily navigable). We switch banks along the Roer a few times. It sometimes means climbing out of the valley and descending again, occasionally it means steep climbing.
In the Roertal, you can see the sandstone cliffs in some places, as well as the Nideggen Castle, which towers high above the Roertal.
Finally, there is one last climb to the holiday park, as it is built against the slope of the Schwammenaueldamm.
