Description by the author

The route starts in Leichlingen on the Wupper and you follow it clockwise. There is an immediate steep ascent to the Bergerhof (the Bechlenberg). Then you descend into the Wupper valley, cross the bicycle bridge over the Wupper, and cycle towards Haasenmühle. Here, the route overlaps for a few hundred meters with the return path. It continues up and down in an area with strong relief, many deciduous forests interspersed with meadows and villages with half-timbered houses. While cycling near large urban areas (such as Solingen and Leverkusen), this route aims to use as many quiet(er) side roads as possible. Sometimes, you have a stretch of main road (with sometimes a cycle path alongside) as a connection between the side roads. Some side roads have medium-quality asphalt.

Towards Solingen, there are two steep descents over bumpy road surfaces and a longer ascent (over excellent road surfaces) into a suburb of Solingen. Then you dive back into the Wupper valley and cycle out of Wuppertal over a 2.5 km long ascent to Flamerscheid (the descent and ascent are on excellent road surfaces, with not too much traffic). You are now heading towards the hamlet of Eichen, which is hidden in a stream valley, and then cycle to the reservoir of the Murbach (Diepentalsperre), followed by a steep ascent out of the stream valley.

Then you follow the paved cycle path along a former railway line (Panorama Radweg Balkantrasse) to Burscheid. Afterwards, you enter the beautiful Wiembachtal on a quiet road and cycle to Durscheid. In Durscheid, there is an ascent over moderate road surface (and likewise descent). You climb out of the Wiembachtal and descend again there (with a heavily trafficked connecting road with a cycle path alongside). There is again a nice ascent over good road surfaces, away from the Wiembachtal. Then you descend back into the Wiembachtal and climb away from it. You then descend into the Murbachtal to the village of Balken (with beautiful half-timbered houses) and ascend again: Now it goes continuously up and down with climbs of up to one and a half kilometers in length.

Near Leichlingen, there is a longer climb to the Roderhof (above the Roderbirken Clinic). You then return to the Wupper basin (where the longest and steepest climbs on this route are) and descend along a road with a gradient of 19%! There are two more climbs around the Wupper valley, one from Rüden (a town with beautiful half-timbered houses) and the nice ascent over the hamlet of Leysiefen. What remains is the descent to Leichlingen.
Please note: The number of meters of altitude is more than 200 meters higher than indicated on routeyou!
