You will start your tour in the center of the old town, on the market square in front of the bookstore. The market square is still the active centre of the people of Dorsten and in the course of the year becomes a wide variety of events, such as the Dorsten Cultural Summer or the Festival of Lights, a meeting place for city dwellers and guests from the surrounding area.
Leave the market square and turn right behind the St. Agatha Church into Suitbertusstraße. At the end of the street you cross the Südgraben and at the ramparts and ditches you will find the next history station on the left with a view of two banks.
32 GS Banks
Now walk a few steps to the left along the ramparts and moats, cross the canale piccolo and go straight ahead towards the police station. In front of the guardhouse, turn left and then immediately turn right over the pedestrian bridge to reach the central bus station. At the level of the passage to the train station, the next history station awaits you. Reconstruction measures, accompanied by the so-called station family, will change this area a lot in the coming years. However, the linchpin will still be the old railway station as a multifunctional building.
39 GS Railway
Leave the central bus station in the direction of the city centre, cross the pedestrian traffic lights at the level of the fast food restaurant and walk in the direction of Julius-Ambrunn-Straße, which merges into Südwall. At the level of the Dorstener Zeitung you will come across the next history station.
19 GS Dorstener Zeitung
We continue on the south wall. At the next pedestrian traffic light, cross the street and walk a few more steps on Gahlener Straße on the other side, then turn right into Westwall. A few steps behind the war memorial on the right, the next history station awaits you. The large green area with remains of the old city wall invites you to stay.
07 GS Erler Findling
Then you continue on the Westwall, which you cross at the traffic lights and on which you then stay until you reach the shopping center. Now it's left around the shopping center. You cross the Hochstadenbrücke, then the Hochstadenplatz and walk to the Brüderstraße. On the right, on your way, you will find the Atlantis leisure pool, which you will circumnavigate. You leave Kurt-Schumacher-Straße at the level of the Dorstener Aak, where you will find the last history station of your tour. But you should definitely dive into the belly of the Aak as well. This is possible every day until the early afternoon and you will be offered hands-on history.
22 GS Schiffahrt
To return to your starting point, walk past the leisure pool towards the city centre. You cross the bridge over the Wesel-Datteln Canal, cross the Westwall with a view of the Goldener Anker restaurant by star chef Björn Freitag and walk through Lippestraße towards the market square.
