The foundation of the Teutonic Order at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers in 1216 gave this historic place the name "Deutsches Eck". Koblenz owes its name to the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers - over time, "Castellum apud Confluentes", Latin for "the fortress at the confluence", became the current name of Koblenz.

Deutsches Eck

The Deutsches Eck, also known as the Deutscher Ordt in ancient texts, is a memorial in Koblenz, Germany. The artificially created headland marks the confluence of the Moselle and the Rhine. On the Deutsches Eck there is a national monument to German unity. The Deutsches Eck is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape Upper Middle Rhine Valley.
The headland has an artificial, pointed shape to accommodate the national monument that was erected there in 1897. The monument was originally intended to commemorate German reunification in 1871 and consists of an equestrian statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I on a high pedestal. For a long time, the cavalry statue, which was destroyed by artillery fire during World War II, was missing.
