Did you know that the human sex ratio (men versus women) for the age group 15-64 in Djibouti is the lowest in the world. This means that there are many more women than men in the country. Nowhere else in the world, there is a country with a sex ratio of 0.81 for that age group. This means that there are 100 women for 81 men. Gut feeling related to "more testerone-fuelled violence" might make you assume that more men versus women would lead to more violence. But a study of Ryan Schacht at the Univeristy of Utah shows exactly the opposite. Schacht states that "when women are in short supply, men perceive them as being more valuable resource". Consequently, men must be more dutiful to win and retain a female partner, and behave. In an abundance of women, men are spoilt for choice and adopt promiscuous behaviour that brings them into conflict with other men. Males become more violently competitive when there are more women.
