Bælum Sønderskov is a mosaic of deciduous forest, coniferous plantations, and small encroachments of heath. In the forest floor, there are several hollow ways. A hollow way is an old road that has been worn into the terrain over time due to repeated traffic – often by people, animals, and carts. It appears as a depression in the landscape and can be several meters deep. Hollow ways arise especially on slopes, where erosion and rainwater have intensified the wear tracks. Many hollow ways date back to ancient times and the Middle Ages and are today protected historical monuments that tell of past journeys and routes through the landscape.
