The steepest parts of the valley sides have never been cultivated. Throughout history, they have been used for grazing. Permanent grazing areas on dry soil are called heath. The vegetation is hardy and withstands drought and browsing. Sønderup Ådal contains large areas of heath. This is one of the most beautiful heath areas near Højris Mølle, with a large presence of juniper bushes. You can navigate the area via various paths. The Hærvejen also passes through the area.
