The History of the Art Collection
Nivaagaard's Art Collection was originally private and was created by the landowner and politician Johannes Hage (1842-1923) between approximately 1895 and 1905.
Johannes Hage collected European paintings from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, as well as Danish art from the Golden Age. By a foundation deed dated September 30, 1908, Johannes Hage turned his private art collection into an independent institution open to the public.
Even before that, in 1903, he had commissioned the architect Johan Schrøder to build a small art temple for the collection near Nivaagaard's main building.
Until his death in 1923, Johannes Hage served as chairman of the board that ran the museum until 1981, when the first professional director was hired.
