Østre Gulstav is a very special type of coppiced forest that can also be found in other places on Langeland. The forests are called coppice woodlands or pollarded woodlands, as the entire forest is cut down every 20 years, after which the trees grow new shoots from the stump. This type of forest provides good living conditions for, among others, the anemone. In the spring months, you can experience a sea of anemones in the bright forest floor. Near the nearby Gulstav Mose, there is a good population of the wild orchid, the butterfly orchid. This blooms in a beautiful purple color in May when the cuckoo calls.
