At the end of Calle Las Damas we find a huge open space, the largest of the squares in the colonial zone: Plaza España or Plaza de la Hispanidad. The statue of Nicolás Ovando presides over the center of the square, which is, in turn, the scene of concerts and other public events. On the southwest side (in the area bordering the Museum of the Royal Houses) stands a monument commemorating the proclamation of the colonial zone as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The north side of the square is formed by buildings that were old warehouses and taverns, connected to each other by means of interior courtyards. Now it is full of bars and terraces, and is one of the places with the greatest nightlife. There is also the Goldsmith Workshop School and the curious Ham Museum (which turned out to be a restaurant.
