Starting from the coup in 1936, control of the phone company building passed into the hands of the anarchist militias. On May 3, 1937, the communists attacked the anarchists and barricaded themselves in the Colón hotel right in front of the phone company building. Minister Federica Montseny, herself a member of the anarchist labor movement, brought an end to the street battle between the two sides.
